Listed for $9.5 million and located in<a href=\"http:\/\/www.realtor.com\/realestateandhomes-search\/Islesboro_ME\" target=\"_blank\">Islesboro<\/a>, the massive waterfront home sits on a tiny island surrounded by the waters\u00a0of Penobscot Bay.<\/p>\n<p>In our role as amateur house matchmakers, we thought it would be totally awesome if 2016 presidential candidate\u00a0<strong>Jeb Bush<\/strong>\u00a0splurged on the state\u2019s most expensive home. Alas, the former Florida governor just settled for a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/news\/nation\/2015\/05\/23\/jeb-bush-having-new-house-built-for-him-family-compound-maine-even-prepares-for-campaign\/mrVSwhPYkanfgL6nA4fRVK\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">guesthouse<\/a> at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bush_compound\" target=\"_blank\">Bush family compound<\/a>\u00a0down the coast in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realtor.com\/realestateandhomes-search\/Kennebunkport_ME\" target=\"_blank\">Kennebunkport, ME<\/a>. Our dreams dashed, this mansion\u00a0will have to find another scion with stacks of cash.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"caption visible-s visible-sm visible-md visible-lg\">Exterior of the Grace Estate<\/p>\n<p class=\"credit\">LandVest<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"image\">\n<figure class=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-205102\" src=\"http:\/\/rdcnewscdn.realtor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Islesboro-4.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior of the Grace Estate\" width=\"995\" height=\"661\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Known as the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thegraceestate.landvest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Grace Estate<\/a>, the 17-room mansion was built in 1918 in the up-island area of Islesboro. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.portlandmonthly.com\/portmag\/2014\/12\/high-society\/\" target=\"_blank\">Constructed for the daughter<\/a> of New York City\u2019s then-mayor,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Russell_Grace\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>William Russell Grace<\/strong><\/a>, the sprawling <a href=\"http:\/\/www.architecturaldigest.com\/ad\/real-estate\/2014\/june-estates-for-sale_slideshow_item0_1\" target=\"_blank\">Renaissance Revival\u2013style home<\/a> was designed by architect <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wilson_Eyre\" target=\"_blank\">Wilson Eyre<\/a><\/strong> on 9\u00a0acres of secluded land.<\/p>\n<p>Eyre\u2019s concept\u00a0was to build a home that maximized the island\u2019s views and, according to listing agent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.landvest.com\/our_team\/info\/tsortwell\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Terry Sortwell<\/strong><\/a>, the vision was a success. Once you disembark and drive off the boat, Sortwell says, the journey is worth\u00a0it. \u201cThe home\u2019s in a fantastic setting. You drive across a little spit of land to what\u2019s basically your own island.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The eight-bedroom home has been renovated over the years and features a\u00a0modern\u00a0kitchen that\u00a0blends seamlessly with the old-world touches that abound throughout the 9,000-square-foot home. Out back, there\u2019s a pool and a putting green surrounded by well-groomed landscaping. The ferry runs year-round, but Sortwell says he considers the Grace Estate\u00a0as part of a \u201csummer community\u201d of folks who flock to the quiet beauty of Maine\u2019s coastline during warmer months.<\/p>\n<div id=\"rdc-newsletter\" class=\"half\"><\/div>\n<p>The agent adds that he\u2019s just looking for a buyer who says, \u201cThis is a place I want to be.\u201d He understands he\u2019s selling a property that a buyer doesn\u2019t necessarily need.
