Your garbage might pile up faster than you think. In 2013, Americans created 254 million tons of waste, an average of 4.4 pounds per person every day<\/em>, according to theU.S. Environmental Protection Agency<\/a>. While some of that refuse\u20141.51 pounds per person, per day\u2014is recycled, the majority ends up in landfills, adding to an ever-growing ecological\u00a0nightmare.<\/p>\n

But there is an alternative: upcycling. It\u2019s easy! It\u2019s good for\u00a0the environment! And it\u2019s fun. Really.<\/p>\n

OK, hear us out on this one: Converting your used or unwanted junk\u00a0into newer and infinitely more\u00a0awesome stuff is a truly\u00a0rewarding way to spend a weekend. And you don\u2019t even have to\u00a0be all that crafty to pull it off!<\/p>\n

What you can upcycle<\/h2>\n

A broken vase, a carton of past-their-prime eggs, and even a stack of way-<\/em>past-their-prime CDs from the \u201990s can be repurposed into gorgeous and functional home d\u00e9cor.<\/p>\n

Take those eggs, please (we\u2019re here all week, folks!).\u00a0The cleaned, empty eggshells can be turned into miniature planters for\u00a0succulents, a project we found in \u201cMake Garbage Great<\/a>,\u201d by Tom Szaky<\/strong> and Albe Zakes<\/strong> of the recycling company TerraCycle<\/strong>. And those deeply unwanted Limp Bizkit<\/strong> CDs can be used\u00a0to supply some\u00a0colorful pop to a room divider. More? You can even make orange peels into candles, a bicycle inner tube into a wallet, and a plastic bottle (and spoons) into a bird feeder.<\/p>\n

Our favorite projects<\/h2>\n

Some of our favorite DIY trash projects from \u201cMake Garbage Great\u201d are modern takes on furniture and home d\u00e9cor items that look remarkably similar to pricier pieces we\u2019ve seen in places such as\u00a0Restoration Hardware and West Elm.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy favorite is the pallet table,\u201d says Zakes. That\u2019s a side table made out of a wooden shipping pallet. \u201cPallets are really easy to get your hands on, and you can make these cool tables yourself for next to nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zakes\u2019 wife, who isn\u2019t quite the environmentalist he is, loves the fork place-card holder, a project that turns unwanted silverware into kitschy table d\u00e9cor.Us? We love the simplicity and beauty of the glass candlestick. The project takes bits of broken or unwanted glass items to create a modern-looking, shabby-chic candlestick with very few tools or know-how required.<\/p>\n

Keep on dumpster diving<\/h2>\n

If you find a project you love but don\u2019t have the materials to make it, don\u2019t let that stop you. Zakes recommends looking beyond your own garbage bin to what you can collect from friends, neighbors, co-workers, or even nearby businesses.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of times you see a project you want to do, like making a room-dividing screen from old CDs, and you wonder, \u2018Where am I going to get 100 CDs from?\u2019 But if you think a little bit outside of the box, all of these things are pretty accessible. You could go to a flea market and pick up a crate of unwanted CDs, or even send out an email at the office,\u201d Zakes says.<\/p>\n

Upcycling can be educational, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can learn a lot about the history of mankind by looking at garbage over the years,\u201d Zakes says.<\/p>\n
