When a dog named Hank navigated 11 miles home over two days<\/a> to his foster owner in Memphis, TN, recently, it had many of us thinking, \u201cAwww, isn\u2019t that sweet,\u201d and marveling\u00a0anew at the navigational powers of pets.\u00a0How do these\u00a0animals\u2014without maps, GPS monitors, or the ability to ask for directions\u2014find their way home?<\/p>\n

Hank is hardly a fluke, either.\u00a0In 2013, a cat traversed 200 miles over two months to reach <\/a>its\u00a0old stomping grounds.\u00a0Meanwhile, seabirds and tortoises travel entire hemispheres\u00a0when they migrate to the same old nesting areas\u00a0season after\u00a0season. As for how they do it, it depends on the species.<\/p>\n

Cats, for instance, rely on magnetic fields, orienting\u00a0themselves along the Earth\u2019s\u00a0north-south poles much like a compass, according to scientists interviewed by Time<\/strong> magazine.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, dogs lean heavily on their sense of smell. Had Hank walked those 11 miles, he could have just followed his scent trail home, Bonnie Beaver<\/strong>, executive director of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists, told Time. Or, if a\u00a0dog were taken by car, as Hank was, it\u00a0might\u00a0rely on overlapping\u00a0circles of familiar scents.<\/p>\n

Does that mean you need to make a Costco run for loads of air fresheners? Not so much. The pup might pick up a whiff of a dog it\u00a0knows, which leads it\u00a0to a well-known\u00a0tree or trash can.<\/p>\n

How to keep your pets safe at home<\/h2>\n

While the power of pets to return to their owners\u2019\u00a0arms may be astonishing, scientists\u00a0point out that we shouldn\u2019t overestimate their abilities, either. Dogs like Hank make the news; hundreds more don\u2019t because, well, they stay lost.<\/p>\n

In other words, pet owners should continue doing what they can to keep their furry friends\u00a0from wandering off. That means\u00a0keeping your cats indoors, installing sturdy fences for dogs, and outfitting all animals with a collar and ID tag. Even high-tech pet microchips will run you only $25 to $50<\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0could\u00a0be worth the peace of mind of knowing\u00a0that these four-legged members of the\u00a0family have a built-in ID. Because after all, even if Fido or Fluffy can find their way home, why not make it a little easier on them?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
